OVERVIEW
The Shasta-Tehama-Trinity Joint Community College District (Shasta College) sits at the northern end of the Sacramento Valley, surrounded by mountains to the north, east, and west. The area provides a wide array of outdoor amenities and activities with miles of hiking and biking trails, national parks, two lakes, and the Sacramento River. The main campus is located in the city of Redding, population 90,000. GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES
The Shasta-Tehama-Trinity Community College District is a collaborative and inclusive organization that strives for equity and equal opportunity and that serves a diverse student population.

Under administrative leadership, it is the responsibility of the full-time college instructor to teach classes and to participate in processes that will result in continuous improvement of instruction and programs, student success and completion, and advancement of the vision, mission, and values of Shasta College.

INSTRUCTIONAL RESPONSIBLITIES
Conduct multiple choral ensembles, including but not limited to, mixed student/community choirs and vocal jazz ensemble. (All ensembles are well-established with long-term college history). Develop and teach curriculum for a new Recording Arts/Commercial Music program. May teach classes in class piano and general studies courses in music appreciation and/or world music

CLASSIFICATION: Placement on the current Faculty Salary Schedule is commensurate with previous education and experience.
  • Full-time instructional faculty are contracted to work 175 days per year including 164 days of classroom instruction and 11 days of professional growth and development. Instructors enjoy up to 18 weeks off per year during the summer and winter intercessions. The Fall and Spring semesters each contain 17 weeks of instruction with approximately 82 instructional days. The Fall semester begins in late August and ends in mid-December. The Spring semester begins in mid-January and ends in mid-May. The number of hours worked in any given day during a semester will vary based on course schedules.   • Salary Range: $61,471.87 - $130,478.46/year on the 2023-2024 Full-Time Faculty Salary Schedule
  • $2,000/year doctorate differential
  • State Teachers Retirement System (STRS)


START DATE: This position is anticipated to start the beginning of the Fall 2024 semester. May also be expected to teach at the Tehama (Red Bluff) campus and online.

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, AND EXPERIENCE
The successful applicant will be able to demonstrate that they are broadly prepared and have a depth of knowledge in the discipline. In addition, successful applicants will be able to demonstrate the following knowledge and abilities:

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES
Responsibilities designated below are primary to the instructor role.

Classroom Responsibilities:
  • Meet classes/laboratories as assigned within the academic calendar.
  • Develop and implement instruction for each class and laboratory period, consistent with the official course outline and District guidelines.
  • For online and hybrid courses, maintain online course components, including asynchronous or synchronous content delivery, as required by the teaching assignment.
  • For online and hybrid courses, provide regular student-student and student-instructor contact.
  • During the first week of class, distribute a syllabus for each course to communicate to students the course description, objectives, grading, testing, attendance, and other requirements, in accordance with District guidelines on syllabus content.
  • Provide regular, timely feedback to students; return all graded work in a timely fashion.
  • Assign final grades for courses as required by District policy, administrative procedures, California Education Code, and Title 5.
  • Demonstrate respect for student rights as specified in District policy and applicable laws.
  • Submit requisitions for textbooks and instructional materials in a timely manner and with consideration of cost to the student.
  • Refer students to tutoring and related student services when appropriate.
  • Supervise students in off-campus activities when participation is expected as part of a course requirement or where such supervision is part of the instructor's load.
  • Provide academic assistance and related services to students during scheduled office hours.
  • Participate in professional development to remain current in the assigned discipline.
  • Submit required administrative paperwork, including student learning outcomes in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Discipline-specific classroom responsibilities as assigned.
Additional Responsibilities:
  • Schedule and maintain office hour days and times and ensure that they are clearly communicated to students in all classes and to division staff.
  • Participate in the process of participatory governance through District participatory, ad hoc, or advisory committees.
  • Participate in the curriculum review process within established cycles; develop new courses in response to student or community needs.
  • Participate in program review and annual planning within established cycles.
  • Participate in selection (hiring) processes, as needed.
  • Attend and participate in department and division meetings.
  • Assess learning outcomes and participate in learning outcomes processes.
  • Participate in required professional development activities that result in improved pedagogy leading to student success and completion.
  • Continue to develop professional skills and remain current in subject matter knowledge.
  • Meet all flex requirements as described in the faculty collective bargaining agreement.
  • Participate in the evaluation process as described in the faculty collective bargaining agreement.
  • Keep and submit official records required by District policy and administrative procedures.
  • Abide by District policies concerning District property and safety.
  • Report absences due to illness or for personal necessity to the supervising administrator.
  • Recommend purchases of instructional supplies and equipment as needed.
  • Fulfill all obligations as established in the current collective bargaining agreement.
  • Discipline-specific additional responsibilities as assigned.


Experience/Education

Education Required:
  • Master's in music
    OR
  • Bachelor's in music
    AND
    Master's in humanities
    OR the equivalent
Experience Required:
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to, and understanding of, the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds of staff and students, as well as staff members and students with physical and/or learning disabilities.
Desirable Qualities:
  • Excellent teaching/conducting abilities and a sincere dedication to music education.
  • Current and active record of achievement with choral ensembles.
  • Current and active knowledge/skills in commercial music/recording arts.
  • Ability to actively recruit for students within the community.
  • Ability and desire to build professional relationships with music teachers throughout the region.
  • Ability and desire to work with and teach music students and community members of all abilities.
  • Master's degree in Music is required, a Doctorate in Music is preferred.
